Memories of Matsuko
Holy crap...i'm seriously on a roll with this blog thing. So i ended up sleeping around 4 because i was up watching a movie. BAD IDEA!
This movie is so tragic. It made me depressed, cry, and heart-heavy. The only reason why i watched this movie was because my OS said it was one of her favorite movies. She compared it to Amelie+Moulin Rouge. The only resemblance to Amelie is the quirkiness, cinematography, and use of color. Crap...she forgot to mention that the storyline was the complete opposite. I guess that's where the Moulin Rouge comes in...along with random musical sequences plastered in throughout the plot. It's super tragic and you yearn for life to give the protagonist a break. This movie shows how a dream can go awry just because of one wrong decision. That one wrong decision sets off a chain of consequences.
She was once a popular school teacher until one day, one of her students stole money. She took the blame and got fired. That prompted her to run away from home. And that's when all the messed up crap happened. Actually, it happened very early in life. Her family relationships were troubling. She wanted her father's approval and affection but never got it. Her relationship with men weren't any better. What tore her a part was abandonment: "Why do people leave?" Somehow, she manages to pull herself together. But after being left by so many true loves, she couldn't pick herself up after the last one. What's sad is that she never knew/realized how many lives she touched and influenced, especially her past loves.
It's so bittersweet and tragic. It's sort of comedic, but under the dire circumstances...how the heck can you laugh? I didn't start to cry until the end because my heart couldn't take her pain anymore. It was so intense. The acting was superb...storyline...everything about it was well-made. If you're into tragedies, give this one a shot. This didn't rub me the right way. Maybe because i watched it alone...and at night.
